Starting in the middle 1980’s, Porsche began to create purpose-built race cars for Porsche-only race series around the world. These included the 944 Cup Series, 944 Turbo Cup Series, The Escort Series, The 968 Firehawk Series, etc. In Europe, the Carrera Cup and Supercup Series began in 1990 with the a purpose-built 964-based car. These cars were raced from 1990-1993, but in 1994, Porsche developed its next iteration of the 911 Race Car based on the new 993 chassis.
The new 993-based Porsche 3.8 Cup was produced specifically for European Supercup Racing and German Carrera Cup Racing. It’s 993 chassis was more torsionally rigid than the 964 and its engine, suspension, and brakes were all upgrades to the previous car. 993s ran from 1994-1998 in Europe until the advent of the new 996 GT3 Cup cars in early 1998. Only 127 3.8 Cups were ever produced, with only XXXX in 1996!
#100 is a wonderfully original Cup which ran only 2 professional races in Brazil. It retains much of its original paint, and is one of only a handful of cars painted in Yellow that were ever produced (there were only 3 official colors: white, black, and red). It began its life as part of the ill-fated South American Supercup Series that was slated to occur in 1996. The car ran 2 races there before the entire series was cancelled. Then, like most of those cars, it was sent to Miami for sale to the U.S. market. Initially purchased by a friend of our customer, it sat around until 2000, when our client purchased the car. He used it for 10 PCA amateur races and then “track day” events, where the car performed flawlessly and was never seriously damaged…ever (unlike the vast majority of these cars!) All races are documented in the accompanying log book. This Cup has been meticulously maintained by ex-Alex Job technician Sid Collins and is fully serviced and ready to collect or race. Spares include: custom jack stands, air jack wand, and an extra set of BBS rims. This is an incredibly rare, factory race car that would benefit any collection in the world.
