Beginning in 1975, Porsche introduced the very first production Turbo 911.
Designated the 930 Turbo in Europe and the 930 Turbo Carrera in North
America, the car was an instant success as well as an iconic design. The
body incorporated flared metal arches to accommodate the 225/50 15s and
205/50 15 tires, a recognizable large rear spoiler (the “whale tail”), as
well as generous interior amenities. The 3.0-litre engine produced an
astounding 260hp and was mated to a four-speed manual transmission.
By 1978, the 911 Turbo’s displacement was increased to 3.3liters and engine
output was now 300hp. This displacement remained in effect all the way
through 1993 with output finally tapping out at 320hp.
Then, in 1994, Porsche produced a very limited run of approximately 1,500
3.6 Turbos worldwide. The engine displacement was now increased by 0.3L
with output bumped to a whopping 355hp! Even more rare was a limited run of
only 90 cars designated as a 1994 3.6 Turbo S.
